Africa covers about 30,370,000 km² km² — roughly 22.3%% of the world's land and the 2nd largest continent. It spans 58 countries and territories, from Democratic Republic of the Congo (2,334,703 km² km²) down to British Indian Ocean Territory.
At true size Africa is about 0.7× the size of Asia. On old Mercator maps that gap shrank or swelled depending on latitude — on the new map it is simply true.
Mercator's distortion hits Africa unevenly: Tunisia is inflated about 1.5× at its latitude, while Democratic Republic of the Congo, near the equator, is drawn almost honestly. Old maps therefore made Africa's northern countries feel dominant while hiding the scale of its equatorial ones.
