This is the Equal Earth projection: the new standard for world maps, adopted by the United Nations in 2026, that shows every country at its true size. It is an equal-area projection designed by Šavrič, Patterson and Hürger (2018) — it keeps the familiar world-map silhouette while drawing area honestly, everywhere on the globe.
The old Mercator map (1569) was built for navigation, not for comparing sizes. It inflates land near the poles, so on it Greenland looks bigger than Africa — in reality Africa is about 14× larger. Russia and Canada swell far beyond their true share of the world's land, while Brazil, the DR Congo and Indonesia shrink.
Try it yourself: drag any country — pick it up and drop it onto another to see how they really overlap. The whole map is rendered at a smooth 60 fps. Search for any country in the bar above, or zoom and pan with your fingers or mouse.
