Oceania covers about 8,600,000 km² km² — roughly 6.3%% of the world's land and the 6th largest continent. It spans 25 countries and territories, from Australia (7,706,009 km² km²) down to Nauru.
At true size Oceania is about 0.2× the size of Asia. On old Mercator maps that gap shrank or swelled depending on latitude — on the new map it is simply true.
Mercator's distortion hits Oceania unevenly: Heard Island and McDonald Islands is inflated about 2.8× at its latitude, while Kiribati, near the equator, is drawn almost honestly. Old maps therefore made Oceania's northern countries feel dominant while hiding the scale of its equatorial ones.
